An interesting depiction of St. Nicholas
Lot 2731
Symeon Ouranos, vestarches, kensor and judge of Cappadocia, 11th century. Seal (Lead, 25 mm, 9.68 g, 12 h). O / A/Γ/I/O/C – N/I/K/O/Λ/A, St. Nicholas standing to the right, nimbate, raising both hands in supplication towards the hand of God, extending down in the upper right field. Rev. .../ [C]VMEⲰN / [R]ЄCTAPXH / KЄNCⲰP KAI / KPIT, KAΠΠA/[Δ]OKIAC TⲰ [OV]PANⲰ in seven (?) lines (there likely was a first line with an invocation which is off flan). Apparently unpublished, but cf. DO Seals IV 43.4 (for a seal of the same individual). An interesting depiction of of St. Nicholas on a seal of an important judicial official. Some surface cracks, otherwise, good very fine.

Our seal is an addition to the two seal types already known for the judge Symeon Ouranos, and it provides a link between the two: the seal in Dumbarton Oaks has the same legend, but is paired with an image of "Nikopoios", the Mother of God, on the obverse, whereas another seal with a metric legend mentioning just the judge Symeon Ouranos has a half-length bust of St. Nicholas on the obverse (Wassiliou-Seibt, Corpus 1145)
